An excursion from Sorrento to Capri, an island rich with attractions, is essential for visitors to the Amalfi Coast. Capri is one of the most famous, beautiful and fascinating islands not only in Italy, but in the whole world. The Roman emperors built their villas on Capri, and the remains are available to visit today, set against extraordinary scenery. During the Middle Ages and the centuries that followed, convents and churches were built on the island and have left behind a beautiful artistic imprint, such as Certosa di San Giacomo in the town of Capri. Some of the villas of the celebrities, actors and writers who stayed in Capri during the twentieth century are also available to visit, such as the Villa di san Michele, constructed by the famous Swedish doctor Axel Munthe, whose memoirs, The Story of San Michele, was an international bestseller.
An excursion from Sorrento to Capri offers visitors a wealth of delights, from natural beauty to stunning sea vistas, from archaeological remains to luxury shopping.

Marina Grande is the island’s landing point, marked out by two hills, between which lies the town of Capri, which gives the island its name. A delightful spot, the town is home to the famous piazzetta (mini-piazza), which forms the heart of the glamourous social life of the island’s guests. In Tiberio you can visit Villa Jovis, the large residence of the emperor Tiberius, which combines beautiful scenery with the charm of Roman ruins.
During your day tour from Sorrento you can also visit the town of Anacapri, which, positioned on higher ground, is a less fashionable and more authentic destination. Anacapri is in constant competition with Capri, but deciding which is the more beautiful and fascinating place remains the extremely pleasant task of the visitor. From the Villa di San Michele at Anacapri you can enjoy exceptional views towards the Sorrento Peninsula, the entire Gulf of Naples and of Mount Vesuvius, which looms over the entire region.

If you go on a boat trip while in Capri, you can visit the world famous Blue Grotto, where the water provides beautiful reflections and colours due to its depth and the narrow entrance to the cave. From there you can see one of Capri’s most iconic features: the Faraglioni, the rock formations that rise evocatively from the sea. An island much evoked by poets and authors, Capri has been both protagonist and backdrop in innumerable films; from Godard’s Contempt, starring Brigitte Bardot, to the films of legendary Italian comedian, Totò, such as Totò in Colour.
