Book an excursion from Sorrento to Ischia, a beautiful island containing all a tourist could possibly desire in the space of one square kilometre. You can find stunning coastline, cute little shopping villages and an excellent cuisine that combines the best sea food with the thriving local agricultural produce, as well as wine that has been prized for centuries. You can also get extraordinary views of the sea, particularly from Mount Epomeo, which, at a height of over 2500ft, towers over the island and offers a panorama of the entire Gulf.

Ischia, like the Phlegrean Fields on the mainland, has volcanic origins, and during your excursion from Sorrento to Ischia you can discover the island’s thermal springs. The thermal waters are known for their therapeutic effects on those suffering from rheumatism, arthritis or gynaecological problems, and you can find specialist thermal treatments at all of the top hotels.

The island is divided into several communes, including Ischia (from which the island gains its name), which is accessible via its port. Ischia’s main feature is its castle, which is well worth visiting. There is also Casamicciola Terme, a seaside resort with numerous thermal springs, and Lacco Ameno, where, apart from swimming in the beautiful bay or partaking of thermal treatments, you can visit the interesting sanctuary of Saint Restituta. From Forio you can reach Mount Epomeo and witness the stunning views of the gulf. Barano d’Ischia is one of the most enchanting parts of the island, home to the stunning Maronti beach, one of Ischia’s true gems.

Just outside the town of Forio is La Mortella, the estate of English composer Sir William Walton, famous for the gardens laid out by the landscape architect Russell Page and lovingly cultivated over 40 years by Walton’s widow, Lady Susana. The gardens, planted with over 1,000 exotic species, are open to visitors most days from Easter to early November.

Ischia’s wines have been famous since the time of the Romans and the Greeks, from Piedirosso, or Per’ ‘e Palomm’, a full-bodied red, to Biancolella, a white wine best suited to fish dishes. The wines originate with the Greeks, whose decision to create a colony on Ischia in the seventh century BC demonstrates the enduring fascination of the island.
